Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start-Simo Soo vs Big Dumb Kid

This Sunday night Ears Have Ears will be featuring a unique collaboration between Sydney’s electronic music producer and vocalist Simo Soo & Sydney’s downtempo electronic rap producer Big Dumb Kid.

Last month BDK supported Simo Soo’s self titled LP launch at Blackwire, and since then the two have decided to continue working together, musically inspiring one another in the process. Recently the two artists came together to create a unique soundtrack for Ears Have Ears, consisting of all new tracks and fresh takes on old unreleased tracks, meshing them together to create one continuous piece.

Finding middle ground between Simo Soo’s noise punk rap party mix and BDK’s laid back rap and electro, mutual influences such as chip-tune, dubstep, pop, noise, witch-house, rave and 90’s gangsta rap are also been mixed into this eclectically chaotic piece. BDK and Simo recorded this 11 minute soundtrack in just two sittings over 4 hours.

Simo Soo first began performing and recording solo during his time fronting now defunct noise/punk band Call the Medic, Call The Nurse! in 2008. Simo’s music is a mix of DIY punk aethetics fused with modern hip hop and dance production by way of everything from noise to IDM to autotune pop.

During his musical journey he has already released 5 EPs, 2 LPs and one mixtape made of new material and remixes through Lesstalk Records. Playing shows across Australia, USA and Spain with acts such as Collarbones, The Laurels, Kirin J Callinan, Abe Vigoda, XBXRX, Rat vs Possum, Captain Ahab, Big A little a and more.

Big Dumb Kid is an emerging DIY electronic producer who will be one to watch in the coming new year. BDK creates a popular blend of genuine lyrics on a backdrop of catchy melodies and lucid beats. With his debut self titled LP underway, we’re keen to see how BDK evolves in the coming months.

Big Dumb Kid and Simo Soo will be joining us live in the studio this Sunday night to chat to us all about their new collaborative piece, so be sure to tune into Ears Have Ears on FBi Radio 94.5 FM from 9pm with your host Brooke Olsen.

Her Golden Threads Burned For The Birth Of Daylight-Shane Fahey vs James Domeyko

Ears Have Ears kicks off tonight with an original collaboration between innovative Sydney based musician James Domeyko (one half of Domeyko/Gonzalez) and legendary sound artist/audio technician Shane Fahey (Endgame Records/Megaphon Studios/ex-Makers of The Dead Travel Fast/Scattered Order).

Recently James and Shane met up to create and record an original soundtrack specifically for the show which combines Shane’s signature field recordings and ambient sound art stylings with James’ considered, experimental and somewhat psychedelic multi-instrumentalism.

Together they span two generations of experimental Sydney whilst individually representing two very different approaches to creating innovative new music. Appropriately their soundtrack combines Shane’s signature field recordings and ambient sound art stylings with James’ considered, experimental and somewhat psychedelic multi-instrumentalism.

Ears Have Ears presenter Brooke Olsen caught up with James Domeyko recently to discuss this very special pairing. After pulling an all-nighter of noisemaking in Sydney’s megaphon studios, James Domeyko took time out to talk us though their most soundtrack piece ‘Her Golden Threads Burned For The Birth Of Daylight’…

B: Tell us a bit about your musical background?
JD: First love was classical music. First instrument studied was alto saxophone at 9 in primary school, I mainly learned jazz with the occasional school band kind of orchestration and renditions of pop music. Next, at 12, was the violin for a year, but after I took up the piano at 13, I made the decision to further study to piano as to not disrespect the violin which requires a lot more time and discipline than I had for it at the time. Then I took up classical singing at 15 when I was cast in a musical and wanted to develop vocal strength and control over my higher registers. Then at 17 I picked up the guitar. My teachers all encouraged my improvisational skills and in particular my piano teacher used to challenge me with word association based improvisation. Then I studied music at Sydney Uni. Compositionally speaking I studied under Anne Boyd, Matthew Hindson, Daniel Rojas, Amy Bastow and Alex Pozniak who, when they had the time, were invaluable through the ideas they contributed to my work or by the artists to whom I was exposed.
